NENA 2011 Tour Information

 Tour Logistics

  • All tours are scheduled from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.
  • Roundtrip transportation via deluxe motor coach is from / to the Minneapolis Convention Center. 
  • Lunch or snack breaks are not scheduled stops during the tours.
  • A knowledgeable, uniformed Event Lab tour guide will provide your attendees with an exciting and comprehensive tour.
  • You are invited to ask questions. The Event Lab guides are the most informed guides in the area and they welcome the opportunity to share their extensive knowledge with you.
  • All admissions to museums, parks and the parkway permit are included in the price.
  • A sign with the NENA logo and the specific tour name will be clearly displayed in the window of each motor coach.
  • Tour guide gratuity not included in the price of your tour.
  • Handicap Vehicles are available upon request.
  • All tours are given in English.

Saint Paul – A City for Saints and Sinners

Saint Paul, Minnesota’s capital city is quite a “saintly” city – but it has a grand history filled with sinners. Who knew!
Gangsters and ghosts are some of Saint Paul’s most fascinating and colorful former residents. This most popular and fun-filled tour mixes tales of haunting with the accounts of the city’s 1920’s and 30’s gangster era.
 
An exciting focus of your adventure will be a stop at the Wabasha Caves, where costumed “gangster guides” will commandeer your coach and fill you with the unbelievable tales of kidnappings, nightclub action and gun battles associated with the 1930’s gangsters like John Dillinger, Ma Barker and Babyface Nelson. And yes, Al Capone once called Saint Paul home!   
 
As you wind your way through the history of Saint Paul, additional exciting aspects of your tour will include driving past:
 
  • Landmark Center – the location for many of the gangster trials.
  • Historic Summit Avenue – beginning at the European-style Saint Paul Cathedral and running for 4 ½ miles, you will be on the longest avenue of Victorian mansions in the country. Your guide will highlight some of the more famous residences:
    • The James J. Hill mansion, home of the railroad baron, the home of Saint Paul native F. Scott Fitzgerald and, of course, the Governor’s mansion. 
  • The Griggs residences – locals proclaim that both homes have been haunted for over 75 years!
  • Fitzgerald Theatre, home to Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion”.
  • Minnesota State Capitol – designed by architect Cass Gilbert when he was only 35.
  • St. Paul Cathedral – one of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in the world.

Minneapolis, a major metropolitan area with a wonderful history of Northern European culture, world renowned theatre, art museums and home to Betty Crocker!
 
From a stop at the new Target Field, home of the Central Division Champions, Minnesota Twins, to a whirlwind tour of our world famous museums, you will see and hear it all during this informative and inclusive tour. 
 
The Mill District, home of the Mill City Museum and the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre is a favorite pause during our tour. 
 
The Mill City Museum, built into what was once the worlds largest flour mill, chronicles the milling industry that dominated world flour production and established Minneapolis as the “Mill City.”
 
The Tyrone Guthrie Theatre, opened in 1963 in the heart of Minneapolis, is the only theatre Sir Guthrie established outside of London.   EVERYONE will be in awe when you step out onto the cantilever bridge at the Guthrie. From this inspiring vantage point, you will overlook the Mississippi River toward Northeast Minneapolis, where early settlers from diverse ethnic backgrounds made their homes and their livelihood.
 
This tour will also include a drive past the infamous Walker Art Center and a quick stop at the outdoor sculpture garden. 
 
The coach will detour down some of the back alleys of the Twin Cities as your guide spins a narrative filled with anecdotes about history, social customs, architecture, literature, and famous Minnesotans. No, Mary Tyler Moore never REALLY lived here! 
 
As you wind your way through the history of Minneapolis, additional exciting aspects of our tour will include driving past:
 
  • Walker Art Museum & Sculpture Garden – contemporary art and the unique outdoorgarden make the Walker a must see for every visitor.
  • Lakes District – Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes and your tour will take you past the most beautiful lakes in the heart of the city, the Rose Garden, the historic Lake Harriet Trolley and a stop at Minnehaha Falls – the inspiration for Longfellow’s classic poem, “Hiawatha.”
  • Frederick R. Weisman Museum – a striking stainless steel structure designed by architect Frank Gehry.
  • Minneapolis Institute of Arts – a neoclassical landmark, the museum opened in 1915 and is home to over 8,000 art objects in the permanent collection.
