An Act to Amend theLaws Concerning Enhanced 9-1-1

Be it enacted by the people of theState of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 25 MRSA 2927, sub-1-A isenacted to read:

1-A. Statewide E-9-1-1surcharge. The activities authorized under this chapter arefunded through a special statewide E-9-1-1 surcharge to be leviedon each residence and business telephone exchange line, includingprivate branch exchange or PBX, lines and Centrex lines, trunksserving cellular communications providers in the State andsemipublic coin and public access lines. The statewide E-9-1-1surcharge may not be imposed on more than 25 lines per customerbilling account. Through July 31, 1996, the statewide E-9-1-1surcharge is 2 cents per month per line. Beginning August 1,1996, the statewide E-9-1-1 surcharge is 20 cents per month perline. The statewide E-9-1-1 surcharge must be billed on a monthlybasis by each local exchange telephone utility and be shownseparately as a statewide E-9-1-1 surcharge on thecustomer?s bill.

Sec. 2. 25 MRSA 2927, sub 2-A isenacted to read:

2-A. Surcharge remittance. Eachlocal exchange telephone utility shall remit the statewideE-9-1-1 surcharge revenues collected from its customers pursuantto this section on a monthly basis to the Treasurer of State fordeposit in a separate account known as the E-9-1-1 fund.
